OSEL
With the EARTH's resources being used at an alarming rate, mining Gold for jewelry creates serious ecological damage to the environment it is taken from. By using recycled gold, new pieces known as Green Gold are wonderfully re-crafted and re-born.

OSEL, meaning clear light in Tibetan, is a range of jewelry created entirely by artist, actress and TV personality,

NADYA HUTAGALUNG.

OSEL is an intimate reflection of both her artistry and her belief in the healing power of gems.

BEAUTY inspires us, heals us and gives us motivation for life. I wanted the jewellery to shine a divine light on every facet of my life, so you could say I created it for myself! When all my friends started scooping up my pieces, I knew I had tapped into something that went beyond me!

OSEL is delighted to announce that Nadya does her best to only work with GREEN GOLD for her Gold based collections and is proud to be heralding this new movement in jewelry creation which does not harm the Earth or her environment.

Gold:

Gold mining is very unkind to the environment, for example the production of one gold ring generates 20 tons of mine waste (for further information please see 'green press release') and because of this OSEL recycles gold. This is done by sourcing old jewellery, and taking the gold and melting it down to create new pieces. We find our old gold through our jewellery craftsmen.

Stones:

Mining for stones is also extremely unkind to the environment, with tonnes of waste being produced from mining a single diamond and has the added concern of child labour. Therefore OSEL uses very few diamonds within its collections, and if we do, once again they are old diamonds, sourced by our stone experts that travel the world. This does not only apply to diamonds, OSEL is more than happy to recycle any beautiful stones.

OSEL also uses stones that are sourced using methods that have LESS IMPACT on the environment. For example, we choose rubies and sapphires that can be found at the bottom of river beds in Madagascar that are extracted through the sifting process rather than the dynamite blasting method. Stones from Burma come from family mines, stories of the stones being dug out from a family's living room are what we like to hear. Not only is this kinder to the environment, but in many cases this gives a unique texture and appearance to the stones, and this in turn makes each piece of OSEL jewellery unique.

The stones we use have a very organic feel, which sits perfectly with the design and ethos of OSEL.

OSEL has chosen this route as the designer of the jewellery, Nadya Hutagalung, has long been known to take the environment into consideration. She is at present creating/building her own sustainable house and campaigns wherever possible on the issues of global warming and our need to be kinder to our environment through www.greenkampong.com.
